The next morning we went to Murano, a famous glassmaking island. We caught a boat that was equivalent to a bus, called a Vaporetta. When we got there, the only thing I could see was glass! Glass shops, glass factories, glass masterworks. We made our way to a famous glassmaker. We watched him making some glass. He made a horse and a dish. He makes it by putting some sand on a rod with a little bit of glass and sticking it in the fire and when he brings it back out, it's glass. He then twirls it round, which is how he got the dish the beautiful shape it was. He can also blow through the rod and make the glass thinner and bigger. Blowing through the rod blows air in the glass, making a droplet a balloon. The horse he made was made with a different technique. He got the glass, blew it, spun it round and then used big tweezers to get the legs and the head. He made it so it looked like it was rearing up on its hind legs. After that we went back to St Marks Square, because the church was open at the time that we went. Mum and I went in whilst Dad wandered around, looking at glass. The church had some of the highest ceilings I've ever seen. It had a mosaic floor, with green and white triangular shaped pieces. It had real gold as decorations for some of the paintings. We came back out and met up with Dad, and we had a train to catch! We hurried through Venice, following the signs for the train station. Luckily, we made it in time, and we made our smooth ride back to Bolzano.
